Healthcare Professionals Can Apply for New Student Loan Repayment Program Until Feb. 21
An average of 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. The NHSC Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program alleviates student loan debt for healthcare professionals — physicians, nurses, counselors and others — who are doing important work preventing and treating opioid addiction across the country.
What is the program?
Studies illustrate the best response to opioid addiction is a combination of medications and behavioral health counseling — but many people who desperately need help are living in places where this specialized treatment is simply not available, otherwise known as “health professional shortage areas.”
The HSC Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program seeks to alleviate the burden of student loan debt on healthcare professionals working in these “health professional shortage areas.”
Applicant options include:
- $75,000 in student loan repayment to qualified healthcare professionals for three years of full-time service at an approved substance use disorder site.
- $37,500 in student loan repayment to qualified healthcare professionals for three years of part-time service at an approved substance use disorder site.
This innovative program combats a lack of qualified clinicians while also reducing the financial pressure felt by many healthcare professionals. This is accomplished by attracting doctors, nurses, pharmacists, mid-wives and others to underserved communities, increasing overall accessibility to life-saving preventative options and treatment.
