One Size Doesn't Fit All

The so-called "American Dream" is much different today than it was a couple years ago. The recession serves as a somber reminder that hard work alone can’t sustain a lavish lifestyle. It’s just as important to live within your means – no matter what your income is.

Big houses, big cars and big toys became the norm for many people who simply couldn’t afford them. Now as the nation copes with a downturn, more Americans are taking heed and scaling back. For the first time in many years, bigger isn’t necessarily seen as better.

Consumers have been forced to re-evaluate their needs and wants, but this shouldn’t be viewed negatively. If we learn how to make smarter financial decisions and embrace a "rightsized" lifestyle, we have the potential to emerge from the recession stronger than we’ve ever been before.

Thriftiness is making a comeback. Even some celebrities are jumping on the bandwagon, opting for fuel-efficient Prius’ over super-sized SUVs. Mindsets are shifting in the right direction. The recession has taught many of us that instant gratification doesn’t outweigh long-term financial security.

At its root, rightsizing is about responsible decision making. Yet when we’re faced with temptation after temptation, the right decisions can become a bit hazy. This is why Take Charge America is launching an online educational series on “Rightsizing Your Life”. We’ll provide you with the tools and knowledge to create a comfortable, affordable lifestyle that won’t break the bank. Whether you’re just entering the workforce, raising a family or nearing retirement, rightsizing is central to a secure financial future.
